Think Twice Before Posting Pictures of Your Keys

In the age of online photo-sharing, many of us have learned to censor photos which cast us in a bad light or reveal too much personal information. But while you might blur your driver’s license, have you remembered to blur your keys?

It shouldn’t be that surprising, but photos of keys can be used to make copies. And not just your photos, they could take a picture of your keys if you leave them sitting in plain view.

At this point, the software isn’t commercially available (how many people have a legitimate use for this stuff?), but someone with a good eye or who’s good at programming may take up the idea. So choose to be on the safe side and think twice before posting photos including your keys (apparently they found a number of people had put “what’s in my purse/bag” photos on Flickr) or leaving them lying around.

Wow – thanks for the heads up on that. I never would have thought someone could copy keys from a picture. Some people will do anything to try to take something someone else has worked hard for.

very scary. I would’ve NEVER thought of people doing that, so thanks for the heads up. (geez….what will they think of next?!)

The human animal never ceases to amaze me. For every good thing we create (in this instance, computers and internet), someone somehow manages to come up with a multitude of bad things to do with it.

Well, let me just echo everyone else: never would have thought of that.

No way! That’s crazy.

I usually avoid posting anything personal anyway, but keys…!
