I completely agree. My husband and I really try to focus on not spending frivolously and as a result we don't have many places to cut expenses. I suppose I could dry my clothes outside but due to Mr Morris's allergies that's not really an option.

Like M, I've also been trying to cut back on my grocery budget. I've been making my own bread and trying to just not buy stuff. We've been eating more beans & rice and a lot less meat. I suppose we're healthier and a little richer!

This is an excellent post. In the beginning of learning to save money, I really identified with the latte factor. Now that I have been doing it awhile, it doesn't apply to me. I guess it is important to remember that where we are in our financial journey might be different from where we were just a year ago. The latte factor may apply to some and others of us are just inventing new ways to save.

I admire them too, FB. I hope someday I can apply these same principles even if we're earning much more.

I like your application of it, M. We did that with milk, where we bought powdered to supplement our skim what with its rising prices. We probably still have some cutting space (like our 2 dates/month totaling less than $20) but without that life would be suckier.

Thanks, paidtwice. :-) Your post really got this going in my head.

I love this post. Bravo!

Like M I do (did) have things I could cut but not $10 a day level things.

But eventually I will have to increase the enjoyment factor in life again ;)

I've felt that same criticism of the latte factor.

But I have finally found I have places where it applies. It just isn't lattes or lunches.

But it can be cutting out juice--we don't need it--when buying groceries. Buying toast only in stead of toast *and* bagels when grocery shopping. Skipping the cream cheese and having only one item to use as a spread for sandwiches. Yes, mine all have to do with groceries b/c that's a main area we've worked on lately.

The point is some people like you have no real place to cut at all. I am similar but not quite as extreme. So while the traditional latte items don't apply to me, the concept still sort of does.

I like your system too though. Though it can depress me too b/c I think "Well look at all I didn't spend on and I still don't really have anything to show for it! How depressing!" That is *not* uplifting. Your method's great I think for those who see enough progress from their frugality!

Great post on the psychological aspect of things. I really applaud those who can earn $24,000 a year or less and manage to make it work with a family of 3.

I always <a href="http://fabulouslybrokeinthecity.blogspot.com/2007/04/lessons-from-living-down-and-out.html" rel="nofollow">read this article</a> when I catch myself being a brat.
